Wah Pedals & Filter Pedals

A wah pedal, also known as a wah-wah pedal, alters the tone and frequencies of your electric guitar to give it the distinct sound of someone saying "wah wah."

Filter pedals (also known as envelope filters) enhance your guitar tone by adding or taking away certain frequencies.
This is different from an EQ pedal as the filter pedal dramatically changes the tonal quality of your electric guitar.

Depending on settings, filter pedals can have a dynamic wah sound based on your playing dynamics, an "auto-wah" sound based on tempo settings or have what some refer to as a "fixed" or "cocked" wah sound.

Macdaddy Music sells a variety of wah and filter pedals from brands such as Dunlop, Electro-Harmonix, EBS, Source Audio, Xotic, and Keeley.

What is a wah pedal?

A wah pedal, also known as a wah-wah pedal, is a tone filter effect that you control with your feet. This effect gives your guitar the instantly recognizable sound of someone saying "wah wah." This is an easy, fun pedal to use.

What types of wah pedals are there?

There are two general types of wah pedals to choose from.

Basic Wah Pedal

Basic wah pedals are easy - all you have to do is turn it on! They do not require adjusting or dialing in. The most common basic wah pedal is the Dunlop GCB95 Crybaby Wah Pedal.

Advanced Wah Pedal

Advanced wah pedals give you more control and allow you to adjust your tone or add distortion. A popular advanced wah pedal is the Dunlop 535Q Crybaby Multi Wah.

What is the difference between a wah pedal and a whammy?

A wah pedal oscillates between high and low frequencies. A whammy is a pitch shifting device that raises or lowers the pitch.

What wah pedal does Eric Clapton use?

Eric Clapton uses a wah pedal frequently. You will often see him using a Dunlop Crybaby or a Vox.

What is a filter pedal?

A filter pedal is also known as an envelope filter or an auto-wah. This is a sensitive effect that creates an envelope filter loop that is controlled with the pedals parameters. By contrast, a wah pedal is controlled manually with your foot. It is possible to get both a filter pedal and wah pedal in one unit - check out the Electro-Harmonix Cock Fight Plus Filter / Wah pedal.
