What is a tremolo pedal?

A tremolo effect is a volume based modulation that raises and lowers the volume of the signal coming from your electric guitar. An LFO is used to create a wave form that turns the signal up and down, giving the sensation of motion. You can hear this effect on songs such as Born on the Bayou (CCR) and Crismon and Clover (Tommy James and the Shondells).

What types of tremolo effects are there?

There are three main tremolo types you should be aware of. Tube bias tremolo, optical tremolo, and stomp box tremolo. Most guitarists who are look for a tremolo effect go for the stomp box version.

What is the difference between vibrato and tremolo?

Vibrato is a change in pitch - think of an opera singer using vibrato on a long note, where the pitch is wavering up and down but the volume is the same. Tremolo is a change in volume and the pitch stays the same.
