A guitar preamp powers your signal and gives it the initial tone. It also typically provides overdrive or distortion in an amp.

Does every guitar player need a preamp?

Yes, all electric guitar players need some sort or preamp. This can be in the form of a pedal (Dunlop EP 101 Echoplex preamp), an onboard preamp (Seymour Duncan Blackouts Modular Preamp) , or some other outboard gear. Outboard gear includes rack gear (Rocktron Widowmaker guitar preamp), recording interface, etc.
